Review: Hong Kong Airlines Business Class A350 SFO to HKG

Back in August 2018, Hong Kong Airlines had a mistake fare that sold round trip business class flights to Asia for ~$700. Thankfully, we were lucky, and they decided to honor the mistake fare. With my frugal lifestyle, economy is usually my cabin of choice, and I would never pay retail for a business class flight.

To add to the occasion, this was my very first business class experience.

We were lucky and scored the $600 "mistake fare" roundtrip business class flight from Hong Kong Airlines from SFO to HKG. Check-in Counter

Business class customers have their own priority check-in counter at the airport. Be sure to ask to add your Fortune Wings Club number to the flight reservation if you haven’t already. Each business class customer is allowed to check-in two pieces of luggage weighing up to 32 kg.

The aircraft was an A350, pictured below. Business class customers go through tunnel A, and economy passengers walk through tunnel B.

There are 33 seats in the business class cabin that’s set up in a 1-2-1 configuration. The window seats alternate between being closer to the aisle or the window.

My seat was 18A which was closer to the window with a console between the aisle. I prefer the seat with the console towards the aisle since it gives you a bit more privacy compared to the window seats that are exposed to the aisle. Complimentary drinks were served upon boarding the plane.

Legroom

Legroom

There was plenty of leg room, and the seats with the console towards the aisle have an extra rectangular leg rest on the left. Each seat has lie-flat seat controls, power outlets, USB chargers, remote for the in-flight entertainment, headset, and amenities kit.

The lie-flat seat was comfortable, and there was plenty of space to stretch out. A pillow and blanket are provided.

Lunch was served shortly after take-off. Since the flight was departing from SFO, the featured dishes were from the SF-based restaurant Cockscomb.

Meal service

There were two main meal services and one in-flight snack period. Below are pictures of the menu.

For lunch, the starter was an organic side salad, Chinese soup, marinated Monterrey bay sardines, cauliflower, raisins, and capers. The main course pictured below is the stir-fried seafood with ginger fried rice and seasonal vegetables.

It’s also possible to request a second entree, depending on availability. Below is the braised lamb neck, polenta, and broccoli rabe by Cockscomb. I highly recommend opting for the lamb dish if you have the chance.

Mid-flight snack and refreshment menu

Mid-flight snack and refreshment menu

The mid-flight snacks consisted of assorted dim sum, sandwiches, chips, fruits, and donuts. The dims sum was disappointing because it didn’t seem like it was heated enough. The shrimp rice noodle roll was hard, and the beef ball felt like a dried American-style meatball with Chinese ingredients.

The doughnut was sweet and surprisingly light.

I recommend trying the specialty Hong Kong drinks for the full experience. Classic Hong Kong-style milk tea and yuan yang. Yuan Yang is a mixture of half coffee and half milk tea.

For drinks, there was complimentary champagne, white wines, and red wines. The tea selection pictured below was from Essense.

Overall, I enjoyed my first business class experience on Hong Kong Airlines. The crew was friendly and provided excellent service throughout the flight. Thank you to Hong Kong Airlines for a fantastic flight!
